Training for Volunteer Coordinators
Target participants
Health and social care professionals or service managers who are interested in developing end-of-life care volunteer services in their service units.
Objectives
To empower volunteer coordinators in community to provide systematic and continuous support to the end-of-life care volunteers.
Contents
A systematic volunteer management system is essential to enhance the effectiveness of volunteer participation in community end-of-life care. Unstructured volunteer participation, ineffective services, difficulties in keeping volunteers motivated and high volunteer turnover rates are common problems that can result from the absence of an effective and throughout volunteer management. To ensure high quality EoLC volunteer services, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the University of Hong Kong and four partners including the Haven of Hope Christian Service, the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, the SKH Holy Carpenter Church, St James’ Settlement collaboratively established a systematic volunteer management approach called SENS – (S – Stimulate a Shared Value; E – Enable a Collective Act; N – Nurture an Integrated Team; and S – Sustain a Companionate Community). Based on the SENS approach, relevant theories, tools and practice wisdoms in EoLC volunteer programme management will be shared in the volunteer coordinator training, from the stage of planning, coordinating, managing, to sustaining the volunteer programme.
